The Appearance Day of Lord Nrsimhadeva

nitya-lila pravista Om Visnupad Sri Srimad Bhaktivedanta Narayana Gosvami Maharaja
May 10, 1998
Wales, UK

nrsmighadeva1Respected Harikatha Readers,

Please accept our humble obeisances. All glories to Sri Guru and Gauranga.

….. Srila Gurudeva gave an amazing discourse on the Lord’s appearance day in 1998, in Wales, and he is sharing this with you for the occasion this year. To hear the audio lecture click here.

Just as Srila Sukadeva Gosvami’s speaking of Srimad-Bhagavatam 5,000 years ago is as fresh and relevant today, just as Srila Rupa Gosvami’s books, written 500 years ago, nourish us today, just as Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura’s songs, written 100 years ago, nurture us each day, so there is no difference between the ‘old’ or ‘new’ discourses of Srila Gurudeva. In all of them he is speaking to us anew, each and every day.

Lord Nrsimha’s Mercy

Ito nrsimhah parato nrsimho, yato yato yami tato nrsimhah
bahir nrsimhah hrdaye nrsimho, nrsimham adhim saranam prapadye

Ito Nrismhah parato nrsimho. Nrsimha is here, Nrsimha is there; above, below, in front, in back, in all corners, and everywhere else. Wherever I go, wherever I walk, and travel, I see Nrismha everywhere. He is in our heart, He is in the creepers and plants, and everywhere else. There is not a single place – even an atom – where He is not present.

Since He is everywhere, if you pray to Him to save you, He will come at once and save you as He saved Prahlada Maharaja from Hiranyakasipu. He will take away all of your problems, as He took away all the problems of Prahlada Maharaja. He quickly destroyed Prahlada’s demonic father, Hiranyakasipu, who had been given a boon of immortality. Hiranyakasipu was strong like iron. He was blessed not to die in the sky, by weapons, demons, humans, animals, fire, poison, or any other force of this world. Still, Nrsimhadeva killed him very quickly.

Nrismham adhim saranam prapadye. We take shelter of Nrsimhadeva. Read more

How to Observe Nrsimha Caturdasi

Badger, USA, May 5, 2001, pm
Tridandisvami Sri Srimad Bhaktivedanta Narayana Maharaja

Before I begin my class, I want to announce that tomorrow is Nrsimha Caturdasi vrata. Out of mercy Nrsimhadeva came, saved Prahlada Maharaja, and killed the big demon Hiranyakasipu on this very day – on caturdasi of this month. We should try to observe this vrata. It is better if we follow nirjala, a full fast, and not even drink water. In India almost all devotees do nirjala, but for you Western devotees we give concession. You may take something, but not corn, wheat, rice, grains or anything made with grains. You can take some vegetables, juice, milk, yogurt and so forth, but don’t take so much. And, if you are not taking anything, that will be very good. The mercy of Nrsimhadeva will come upon you.

Aksaya Tritiya falls on the third tithi (Lunar day) of the bright half (sukla-paksa) of the month of Vaisakha. The presiding deity of this auspicious day is Sri Visnu and his worship is performed with great devotion on this day. It is on this day that the doors to the Sri Badri-Narayana Temple are opened and the demigods headed by Brahma, Siva,Indra, Kuvera etc. worship Sri Laksmi-Narayana. Many pilgrims start their pilgrimageto (car-dhama) the four holy abodes (Gango-tri, Yamuna-tri, Badrika-asrama, and Kedarnatha) from this day.

GOVARDHANA ANNAKUTA

From the Harikatha Newsletter: [This year, 2011, Govardhana Annakuta festival is on October 27th. In honor of this day, we are sending the following class that Srila Gurudeva gave in Badger, California in 2003:]

Today, Annakuta Mohotsava, is a very auspicious day. This day is observed in India during the month of Kartika. Many of Krsna’s other sweet pastimes were also performed in the month of Kartika. In this month, under the guidance of Nanda Baba, the Vrajavasis observed Govardhana puja. They did this, having given up the puja of Indradeva, and that resulted in Krsna lifting Govardhana Hill on His little finger. Yasoda-devi bound Krsna in this very month, which is how the song Sri Damodarastakam originated. Read more
